The idea
Up to now a voice has been a melody. From here a voice is anything that keeps its identity while other things are happening.
The source course states it exactly: in Bach the fish are melodies, and "in Wolpe the fish might be a block of staccato chords, a sustained melodic line, a burst of rapid figuration, and a held silence." The voices are behaviours, kept separate by character rather than pitch (Source course, Lesson 10).
That opens two doors. Silence becomes a voice, which is the most useful idea in this module for a producer. And a texture can contain lines nobody plays. Ligeti calls these inherent patterns, and they arrive when enough independent parts run at once that the ear assembles melodies out of whichever notes fall closest together. You compose the parts. The listener composes the tune.

Listen
Wolpe, Form IV: Broken Sequences (1969). The source course gives the protocol. Listen for three things: how distinct the gestural types are, whether each follows its own logic regardless of the others, and what happens when two overlap. The opening hands you the key, a sharp staccato cluster, then a sustained singing tone, then a burst of rapid figuration. Three characters in a few seconds. Pass five: count the silences and decide whether they are one of the three types or a fourth.
Stravinsky, Variations: Aldous Huxley in Memoriam (1964). Twelve solo violins with independent lines, then ten violas with two basses, then twelve winds. First hearing, just register how many independent things are happening. Later, pick one violin and hold it for a few bars before you lose it. The source course's observation is the one to carry away: twelve voices stay transparent only because they differ from each other.
Ligeti, "Automne à Varsovie." Notated in 4/4 with sixteen fast pulses per bar. At one point the right hand accents every fifth pulse and the left every third. Do not listen for two hands. Listen for the two tempo streams the accents create. Ligeti's own account, quoted by Taylor: the ear fuses the accent chains into "a super-signal consisting of two melodies. The ratio 5:3 is of course mathematically simple, but perceptually very complex. We do not count the pulses but rather experience two qualitatively different tempo levels."
Ligeti, "Désordre." Right hand white notes, left hand black notes, and that is the entire pitch rule. Steinitz calls the result a combinatorial tonality, an illusory third tonality produced by the two.
Gil Evans, "The Maids of Cadiz." Trumpet sustains a long line, French horns hold a slow harmonic cushion, tuba walks a melodically independent bass, flutes flicker above. Four layers that are four textures rather than four melodies (Source course, Lesson 10). Wolpe's technique scored for a jazz orchestra, and the line is direct: Wolpe taught Evans.
The comparison
The exact parallel. Species counterpoint and Wolpe's gestural counterpoint are one procedure with a substitution. Species asks whether two lines are distinguishable and whether what happens between them on strong beats makes sense. Wolpe asks whether two behaviours are distinguishable and whether their collisions make sense. The source course says it outright: "What changes from era to era is not the principle but the material."
Wolpe's own vocabulary is worth taking literally. He wants the texture porous, "full of air, full of space between the lines," through "canonic (or double canonic) foldings" and "all possible techniques of inversions, retrogrades, like attacking an object from all sides." Porous is a mixing instruction as much as a compositional one, and if you produce your own records you know the problem under another name.
Where it breaks, first break. In species you can check your work, because every vertical interval has a name and a status. Two behaviours form no interval, so gestural counterpoint has no equivalent check. The only test is perceptual and has to run on a recording rather than on paper. The compensation is the discipline the source course names: differentiate in as many dimensions as possible, rhythm, register, dynamic, timbre and articulation, so that if one fails the others still hold the voices apart.
Where it breaks, second break. Bach's voices are played. Ligeti's are not. Taylor documents Ligeti naming his own device "tempo fugue," and structurally it is a stretto whose interval of imitation is tempo rather than pitch and time. One pulse-subject at multiple simultaneous rates, the form being the accumulating divergence of the entries. That parallel is Ligeti's, not an analyst's invention.
A Bach fugue's entries are discrete statements you can circle in a score. Ligeti's voices are inherent patterns the ear assembles from chains of accents, and nobody plays them. With no subject to track there is no answer, no inversion, no episode. You can write a fugue on a subject. You cannot write one on a pattern that exists only in the listener.
Where the technique came from, documented. Ligeti wrote the foreword to Simha Arom's African Polyphony and Polyrhythm, and his words there state the principle better than any analyst has: the recordings "opened a very complex polyrhythmic world, which I did not know about," and "the patterns performed by the individual musicians are quite different from those which result from their combination. In fact, the ensemble's super pattern is in itself not played and exists only as an illusory outline." Scherzinger, working from sketches rather than interviews, reproduces Ligeti's handwritten dedication in Gerhard Kubik's 1994 Festschrift: "Dear Mr. Kubik, your discovery of INHERENT PATTERNS has immense importance for my compositions," the capitals Ligeti's own. He dates the contacts too, Arom in Israel in 1984 and Kubik in Austria in 1987, with Steinitz fixing the earlier ones, Nancarrow's music in 1980 and Arom's recordings in 1982.
What this lesson does not have sources for. Three things belong in this slot by tradition, and no documentation for any of them is in front of me. Treat all three as to verify and do not assert them as fact.
- Micropolyphony as Ligeti's term for the dense canonic textures of Atmosphères, the Requiem and Lux Aeterna. Term and pieces are real. The technical description summarised online is unverified here.
- Jonny Greenwood's Ligeti-derived string textures. The Penderecki half is documented and you will meet it in L31 and L34, in Greenwood's own liner note to Popcorn Superhet Receiver about wanting "large, Penderecki-style microtonal clusters." No Ligeti model for a specific Greenwood score is documented here. The other connection that is documented runs to Reich: Greenwood performed Electric Counterpoint, and Reich then wrote Radio Rewrite on Radiohead material.
- Dissonant counterpoint as a named doctrine associated with Charles Seeger and Ruth Crawford. The exercise below inverts the species rules, and that inversion is this curriculum's construction, not a citation.
At the piano
Three characters, one keyboard. Fix three gestural types before you play anything, say a low staccato cluster, a sustained middle tone, a fast run at the top. Play them one at a time until each has a fixed identity in your hands. Then in sequence, then two overlapping, then all three. Record every stage.
The white-black split. Right hand white notes, left hand black, both improvising freely at 60 bpm for five minutes without breaking the rule. Listen back for the moments where a third thing seemed to appear.
Clusters that stay transparent. A cluster is opaque when its notes share a register and start together, transparent when they are spread and staggered. Play a six-note cluster at once. Then the same six spread over three octaves, entering half a second apart. Same pitches, two different objects.
Silence as a voice. Two minutes of improvising under one rule: no sound lasts longer than the silence before it. Uncomfortable, and it works.

Exercises
1. Gestural inventory
Do. Listen to Form IV and write down every distinct type of musical event you can identify, naming each yourself. Then find one place where two overlap and describe what happens to each.
Done when: you have three or four named types, and a listener you play the piece to can identify your types from your descriptions.
2. Four behaviours, sixty seconds
Do. Write a minute of piano music on exactly four behaviours: sustained, staccato and dense, fast and running, silent. Each appears at least four times and keeps its identity every time.
Done when: you can play it, and a listener can tell you how many kinds of thing they heard without being told the answer.
3. Inverted species
Do. Write sixteen bars of two-voice counterpoint where dissonance is the norm and consonance is the event. Strong beats take seconds, sevenths and tritones. Thirds, sixths and octaves appear twice in the whole passage, each approached by contrary motion.
Done when: you can play it and point to the two consonances and say what each does. Label the exercise your own construction, not a historical technique.
4. Inherent patterns
Do. Write two continuous lines of even sixteenths, accents every five pulses in the right hand and every three in the left, notated in 4/4 with sixteen pulses per bar. Play it at whatever tempo is honest, starting at 50.
Done when: you can play sixteen bars accurately, and you can hear the two accent chains as two tempo streams rather than as two hands.
5. The Désordre rule
Do. Write two minutes with the right hand on white notes and the left on black, both continuous. No other pitch rule.
Done when: it is playable at your own tempo and you can name the moment a third tonality seemed to appear.
6. Transparency test
Do. Produce three versions of one eight-bar cluster passage: all notes in one octave attacking together, spread over three octaves attacking together, spread over three octaves attacking one at a time. Record all three at the same dynamic.
Done when: you can rank them by transparency and name the single change that did the most work.
7. Register, rhythm, contrary motion
Do. Re-score the Exercise 2 piece for a quartet of your choosing under the source course's three ensemble rules: separate the registers, differentiate the rhythms, move bass and voicings in opposite directions.
Done when: the score prints from Sibelius and each part reads as one behaviour rather than a share of a chord.
Compose
Write the closing piece of Module 3: three minutes, for piano and any two other instruments you can record.
Constraints. Four gestural types, fixed in advance and named at the top of the score, one of them silence and structural rather than incidental. The three instruments never all state the same behaviour at once. One passage of at least twenty seconds where the audible melody is one nobody plays, built from accents in two or more parts. The texture thins to a single behaviour at the end.
Then write one page on what you did and where it came from, naming which techniques trace to Wolpe, which to Ligeti, and which are yours. That page is part of the deliverable.
